July's Writer Under the Influence

Brilliant local poet Bel Schenk is our special guest for July’s Writers Under the Influence event.

Bel is the author of three poetry collections - Urban Squeeze (2003); Ambulances & Dreamers (2008); and Every Time You Close Your Eyes (2014).

She is currently working on her first novel and will be reading extracts from her work in progress, plus a few poems and influences past and present.

'There is a knowingness, an ambiguity at the heart of Schenk's poetry that resists easy labels.' - Geoffrey Lehmann, Australian.

Every Time You Close Your Eyes -  ‘…a solid and original contribution through which readers can see the verse novel anew – as mutable and dynamic in its ongoing negotiations with genres, techniques and forms.’ Linda Weste, Text Journal.

'Sparsely written, yet deeply self-aware ... Schenk’s Every Time You Close Your Eyes shows how poetry can represent moments of time with stunning concentration.' - Autumn Royal, Cordite Poetry Revie.w

Ambulances & Dreamers -  ‘An engaging collection.’ J.M. Coetzee.

Next Writers Under the Influence Event - Wednesday 7th June, 7.30-9.30pm

Writers Under the Influence is a monthly literary event at Buck Mulligan's, where local writers read from works they admire, as well as something of their own, followed by well-lubricated discussions, reminiscent of an old-style writers’ salon.

The wonderful Jenny Ackland is our special guest for June’s Writers Under the Influence event.

Jenny is a local writer and teacher whose short fiction and essays have been published in Kill Your Darlings, Sleepers Almanac, The Big Issue and Visible Ink. She has also been listed for the Voiceless prize,  in Australia, and internationally for The Bridport Prize and The Fish Short Story Prize.

Her debut novel, The Secret Son, is a Ned Kelly-Gallipoli mashup, which dares to twist the history of these two Aussie icons. Published by Allen & Unwin in 2015, it received a commendation in the FAW National Literary Christina Stead Award.

Her second novel, Little Gods, due to be published in 2018, is a story of resilience and revenge, set in the Mallee region of Victoria.

Jenny’s blog, Seraglio – not a pizza place, is at jennyackland.com

“Jenny Ackland’s The Secret Son is a charming and inventive first novel that flirts with history without ever letting facts get in the way of what is essentially a great story – audaciously told and richly woven – about growing up, fitting in and moving on; about stepping out of the shadows of the past and finding your own way.” – Michelle McLaren, Newtown Review of Books.

Next Writer Under the Influence - May 3rd - 7.30-9.30pm

Writers Under the Influence is a monthly literary event at Buck Mulligan's, where local writers read from works they admire, as well as something of their own, followed by well-lubricated discussions, reminiscent of an old-style writers’ salon.

The always-entertaining Grant Caldwell is our special guest this month, with a wealth of experience to share.

Grant has written eleven books, published all over the world: including eight collections of poetry (his latest is Reflections of a Temporary Self: New & Selected Poems in 2015); two novels (including Love & Derangement in 2014); and a collection of stories. His work has been translated into several languages and he has been a featured writer at a number of International poetry festivals.

Grant is also a Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Melbourne.

"Caldwell is one of the most undervalued poets this country has produced, and arguably the most spiritually rich, original poet we have." - Matt Hetherington, Rabbit.

"… the impression is of a rock’n’roll Zen… pure ironic Caldwell… It’s not as nice or as affectionate as O’Hara, but there is the same compositional thought and structure, where the elements of a day are brought together to make a poem." - Michael Farrell, Cordite Poetry Review.
